Lisbon in Winter

Winter Living in Lisbon

The city of explorers, Lisbon is city always on the forefront of the future while keeping its heritage intact.  You can see it in the modern buildings and the ancient architectural wonders.  You can feel it in the air when the diversity of peoples and cultures mingle.  You can experience it in the seven hills of the city.

And you can have all these things to love about Lisbon in winter!  Just be sure to book your holiday apartment online in advance since Lisbon is a favorite tourism destination the whole year-round.  You would not want to join the rush to secure good accommodations once you are in the city.

 Mild Winter, Year-Round Fun

Lisbon is known for its mild winters that rarely go below 10 degree Celsius with sunny days being common throughout the season.  Now contrast that with other European cities that are suffering from below freezing temperatures.  You will definitely prefer Lisbon in a tour of Europe as a winter stopover.

Despite such mild winters, fortunately, you can still find a few great ski locations in areas outside of the city.  Skiing is certainly better than going to the beach where the water is freezing cold and the ocean winds seep through the bones.  But if you are up for a beach stroll on one of the sunny days, then nobody will stop you.  Set up camp, if you want, for a different kind of winter on a beach experience.

 Winter Attractions are Year-Round, too

Because the winter days are mild and pleasant, the tourist attractions are open during the whole season.  Start - or end, whichever is your fancy - your explorations with a panoramic view of the city atop the Cristo Rei.  Buy the mementos sold in stores, if you want to.

Then proceed to the oldest section of town - the Alfama.  It has a long history of occupation starting from the 5th century by the Visigoths and is now occupied by long-time residents of the city.  Plus, its charming village atmosphere is one well worth the visit.

Don't miss the tourist attractions in Lisbon like the Castelo de Sao Jorge, the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos and the Museu National de Arquelogia.  Or just let your feet and fancy take you to places unknown in the city.

 Winter Comfort Food

What is a mild winter without the comfort food to curl up in front of a warm fire?  In Lisbon, comfort food takes the form of hot, spicy dishes liberally dosed with spices like pepper, chili and cayenne as well as cinnamon.

You should taste the bacalhau, or salted cod.  It is the Portuguese national dish that can be prepared, allegedly, in 365 ways.  Add in sardines, hake, lamprey and octopus as well as a variety of available seafood and you can remain holed in your holiday apartment for days on end. Enjoy the city of Lisbon in winter!

Lisbon on summer has a different character than Lisbon in winter.  See both sides of the city and see why it is beloved across Europe.
