3 Institutes of Higher Learning in Lisbon 

         

 If you're planning a trip to Lisbon, make sure to stop in Lisbon. Lisbon is not only the capital of Portugal, but is also the nation's largest city. Also, it has become one of the world's top global cities, and is the second most significant economic and financial hubs located on the Iberian Peninsula. The Lisbon metropolitan area includes a population of roughly 2.8 million people. The city also has a long and rich history, which began when Julius Caesar Made Lisbon a municipium. First, there's the University of Lisbon. It's the largest operating university in Lisbon. While founded in 1911, the schools history dates back to the 1200s. During the school's history, it relocated several times between Coinbra and Lisbon. The entire university moved to Coinbra in 1537, becoming the University of Coimbra. Then in 1911, the founding of today's University of Lisbon transpired. The school's first faculties were the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Sciences, the Faculty of Medicine, and the Faculty of Letters. Additionally, the University of Lisbon has become a leader in various fields of research.   

 

 

 

 

Another renowned university of Lisbon is the Technical University of Lisbon (UTL). The school was founded in 1930 as a collection of several older schools. Today, the school offers degrees in several fields of study, including engineering, economics, veterinary medicine, political science, architecture, and agricultural science. Although UTL is one of the largest state universities in Portugal, the structure of the school has consistently been decentralized. That has resulted in each faculty being significantly independent from the nation's other faculties.   

 

Finally, during your stay in Lisbon you should certainly visit the New University of Lisbon. Established in 1973, it is the youngest state university located in Lisbon. The Since 1977, the school has been progressively expanding. During that year, the school's first regular programs began. New University of Lisbon has been ranked as one of the top 500 universities in the world, and excels particularly in the Arts and Humanities. The school currently has about 15,000 students (2008). Each of the faculties of the school has academic and administrative independence from the other faculties. These faculties include the Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Medical Sciences, and Faculty of Human and Social Sciences.
