How to Turn Your Summer Vacation in Lisbon, into a Memorable One

If you're planning to visit Europe this summer, then make it a point to visit Portugal, Spain's next-door-neighbor. In particular, the city of Lisbon is definitely one that you should spend some time in. Lisbon is both the capital of Portugal, as well as its biggest city. Even the museums and oceanarium boast of unique styles. Speaking of museums, Lisbon contains several types, featuring themes that range from tile to jewelry.  

But that's not to say that Lisbon doesn't contain structures that are found in any fantastic tourist spot in the world. In fact, you can still find historical churches and palaces, and contemporary architecture that complement each other. They make this historical capital burst into life.   

Make sure to visit the Belem Tower while you're in Lisbon. Constructed in 1515, the original purpose was serve as a defense measure at the harbor of Lisbon. During the Age of Discovery, this was actually the launching point of several explorers. In fact, the tower is so important that UNESCO has included it in their list of World Heritage destinations.  

Finally, there's Ajuda Palace. While this royal palace wasn't originally completed, it remains one of Europe's top romantic structures. The interior includes magnificent tapestries, statues, and furniture. This was due to the Portuguese discovering diamonds in their Brazilian colony. In particular, you should see the Winter Garden's ceiling, which was a gift from Egypt.
